Description

This famous pair of galaxies in the constellation Ursa Major belongs to the most well known Messier objects. M81, also known as Bode's Galaxy, is about 12 million light-years away. Because of its proximity to Earth it is a popular aim for astronomers. M82 ( Cigar Galaxy ), is one hundred times more luminous than our galaxy center. Besides the galaxies, this image shows a small part of the galactic cirrus clouds. Because it is so faint, very long exposure times are necessary.
